I recently was encouraged to read the same book on separate occasions by a couple of men close to me. One was an officer that I worked with at training academy and another was a Jiu-Jitsu training partner at our gym. Both of these men are successful and ambitious individuals, so when they mentioned the book to me, I paid attention. They claimed that the stories I would hear in the book would be inspirational. Although I highly respected both the men who referred the book to me, I ignored their prompting for weeks. I thought to myself that I was too busy to read a book and I would rather be doing anything else with the little free time I have. I also thought that I didn’t need inspiration because I am a fitness professional whose job is to inspire others every day. Despite my previous misconceptions, I finally succumbed to their promotion and looked up the book. I discovered it was offered as an audio book which was more appealing to me. I ended up buying the audio book and from the first minute of listening, I was hooked. I finished the book within one week, which is lightning speed for me. The book is called Can’t Hurt Me by David Goggins. I strongly recommend this book for everyone, but especially for people that may be struggling in their fitness journey.

According to his own website, www.davidgoggins.com, “David Goggins is a retired Navy SEAL and is the only member of the U.S. Armed Forces to complete SEAL training (including two Hell Weeks), the U.S. Army Ranger School (where he graduated as Enlisted Honor Man) and Air Force Tactical Air Controller training”. Goggins is also an extremely accomplished athlete. He has competed in over 60 ultra-marathons, triathlons, and ultra-triathlons. He has set course records in many of these races and at one time, set the Guinness World Record for completing 4,030 pullups in 17 hours. At one point in the Navy, Goggins was responsible for recruiting and told his story all over the country to thousands of students. He is also a sought-after speaker for professional sports teams and fortune 500 companies.

To truly appreciate David Goggins story, you must understand where he came from. As a child he was often beaten badly by his father and ultimately raised by a single mother. In school, he was one of the only African American kids in his community and was taunted with racial slurs. He cheated his way through school and by the time he got to the 10th grade he could hardly read. After high school, his weight exceeded 300 pounds. David’s first part of his life was greatly defined by failure and humiliation.

The book Can’t Hurt Me is inspiring to me for many reasons. Obviously, it’s incredible to hear a story of someone turning their life around so drastically, but it goes much deeper that. Goggins is not telling his story to brag about his accomplishments, but he is giving his readers a road map to reaching their full potential and he provides specific challenges to help them do so. Goggins talks about unleashing the hero within you, the reader. Some of these challenges, will have you facing some of your biggest fears and stepping way outside your comfort zone. Ultimately, the goal is to improve every aspect of your life, not just the physical parts.

I have personally recommended Can’t Hurt Me to many of my friends, family and clients with some really positive feedback. My hope is that the people that are reading this newsletter will take my recommendation and start reading this book today. The fact is that many people, including myself, get complacent with even a little bit of success and get soft. After reading this book I have realized that I need to challenge myself in different ways, set new goals, and push the limits on what l am capable of.
